After months of waiting, Chennai reports no COVID-19 deaths.

On Sunday, no COVID-19 deaths were reported in Chennai for the first time in several months. Chennai was one of 20 other districts to report no new COVID-19 deaths, but 29 districts reported new infections in the double digits. On Sunday, Tamil Nadu recorded 2,775 new coronavirus cases, bringing the total caseload to 25.18 lakh, while the death toll rose to 33,418 with 47 deaths across the state. Nine of the 47 patients who died had no comorbidities or pre-existing illnesses.

The state capital recorded 171 additional cases, bringing the total to 5.35 lakh. In Chennai, there have been 8,256 COVID-19-related fatalities. A total of 3,188 persons were recovered in Tamil Nadu on Sunday, bringing the total number of recoveries to 24.53 lakh and the number of active cases in the state to 32,307, according to a medical bulletin. Tamil Nadu reported its highest daily infection rate of 36,184 on May 21, and it has been declining since then. On May 30, the state’s daily case count fell below 30,000, and on June 7, the figure fell below 20,000. On June 17, they numbered fewer than 10,000. Coimbatore had the newest instances on Sunday, with 298 persons testing positive in the previous 24-hour period, while Ramanathapuram had the fewest, with only five new cases.

Meanwhile, Ma Subramanian, Minister of Medical and Family Welfare, has launched an awareness campaign in honor of World Population Day commemorated on July 11. Subramanian noted that the state was a leader in terms of Total Fertility Rate, stating that the proportion of TFR in Tamil Nadu in 2018 was 1.6 percent, compared to the national average of 2.2 percent.

Subramanian went on to say that the government has increased fumigation efforts in the state to combat the dengue and Zika viruses. So far, Kerala has documented 18 cases of the Zika virus. In terms of vaccination, he stated that Tamil Nadu has received 1.60 crore doses to date, including five lakh vials that came late on Saturday. “As soon as the five lakh doses arrived, they were promptly despatched to neighboring districts to hold vaccination camps,” he said.
