Heavy rains are falling in Karnataka, and an orange alert has been issued in seven districts.

New Delhi: As the southwest monsoon intensified in north Karnataka, at least a half-dozen people have died in rain-related incidents in the state since last week. According to the weather service, heavy rain has been falling in north Karnataka since the evening of July 6th. Uttara Kannada, Udupi, Dakshina Kannada, Chikkamagaluru, Hassan, Kodagu, and Shivamogga districts are likely to see heavy rains now that the monsoon has begun.

According to the weather service, a ‘Orange’ alert has been issued in these seven districts until July 16.

A woman and her daughter were killed by lightning on Sunday at Khudavandpur in Bhalki taluk in Bidar district, which has been experiencing unrelenting rain for the past three to four days. The incident occurred when Bhagyashree Metre, 32, and her daughter Vaishali, 9, were returning home from their farm, according to Bhalki police.

Lohit, a three-year-old boy, and his mother, Savitramma, 33, died in Chitradurga after the wall of their house collapsed on them. “Grievously injured, Savitramma was admitted to a private hospital in Davanagere district and died in the early hours of Monday due to injuries, while her husband, Omkarappa, is showing signs of recovery,” Hosadurga police said in a statement to reporters. According to the police, an eight-month-old toddler and a six-year-old boy from the same family were unharmed in this incident.

On July 6, a couple and their bike were washed away in an overflowing stream in Kaalvi village. Mallikarjun, 55, and Sumangalamma, 48, of Muthkur, Hagaribommanahalli taluk, were returning home after visiting relatives in Mundargi taluk, Gadag district. On July 7, their bodies were discovered in the stream after the floodwaters receded.

A spell of heavy rain in the early hours of Sunday caused many streams and rivulets to overflow, rendering many villages in the north-Karnataka region inaccessible. Crops on thousands of acres have been damaged in this region as a result of the unrelenting rains.

On Sunday, coastal districts such as Uttara Kannada, Udupi, and Dakshina Kannada received heavy rains. Heavy rain has been falling in the area since the evening of July 8th.

Thunderstorms are expected in most parts of north interior Karnataka, and a yellow alert has been issued for these districts until July 16, according to an IMD release.
