Heavy rains and strong winds wreak havoc across Kerala, prompting a yellow alert in nine districts.

Thiruvananthapuram: Heavy rains pelted Kerala on Monday night and Tuesday, causing havoc in many areas.

Strong winds destroyed several houses in the Ernakulam district’s Kottuvally, Alangad, and Karumaloor panchayats. Damage was also inflicted on the regions of Paravur and Kunnathunad.

Many parts of the country were without power.

Trees were uprooted by the strong winds in Idukki’s Kodikulam area, destroying several houses here.

Several areas have been clogged by uprooted trees. Agricultural crops have also been severely damaged in many areas.

There is a yellow alert in 9 districts.

The Meteorological Service had predicted heavy rain on Tuesday.

The Indian Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert in nine districts of Kerala, including Kasaragod, Kannur, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Malappuram, Palakkad, Thrissur, Ernakulam, and Idukki.

These areas are also expected to receive heavy rain on Wednesday. A yellow alert indicates that rain will fall in amounts ranging from 64.5mm to 115mm.

A low-pressure belt has formed over the Arabian Sea near southern Gujarat, in addition to the low-pressure belt over the Bay of Bengal near the Andhra coast.

Though it is unlikely to have a significant impact on Kerala, strong winds of 45-55 kmph with gusts of up to 65 kmph are expected along and off the Kerala coast.

Fishermen are cautioned not to go out into the sea near these areas until July 16.

High swell waves of 2.5 – 3.5 metres are also expected along the Kerala coast from Vizhinjam to Kasargod until Wednesday night. Current speeds can range from 70 to 93 cm/sec.
