Houses and crops have been damaged in numerous Kerala districts as a result of heavy rain and wind.

Heavy rains and wind were reported in several parts of Kerala on July 12 and 13 night, causing damage to multiple buildings and agricultural lands in the state’s central region. Due to severe rains on Tuesday, around 200 dwellings were destroyed, and approximately 100 electric poles fell, resulting in lengthy power disruptions in the Pathanamthitta district.

Pathanamthitta’s Ezhumattoor and Ayiroor panchayats were devastated by a storm on Tuesday morning. The cyclone lasted about a minute, yet it damaged many trees, houses, power poles, structures, and crops. Fire Department personnel, volunteers, and police officers have been dispatched in these panchayats to clear roads and assist residents. Aside from massive trees, crops such as plantain and rubber were also damaged. There were no injuries reported in the district.

Trees fell on highways and on top of houses in the Idukki district as well, inflicting major damage. Major damage was also recorded in the district’s Thodupuzha region, where agricultural crops like rubber, plantain, coconut, and tapioca were devastated. Many homes in the Kodikkulam area were also damaged.

Similar incidents have been observed in the Ernakulam district. Around 40 houses were severely damaged and 200 were partially destroyed in the taluk of Paravur alone. Aside from that, other residences in Kunnathunadu, Muvattupuzha, Aluva, and Nayarambalam were damaged. Vehicles were also damaged when trees fell on them, and roads were closed and power was cut off as a result of poles falling owing to rain and wind. Heavy rains were also reported in the Thrissur district.

The Indian Meteorological Department has advised fishermen not to enter the sea from June 13 to June 17 due to the risk of severe winds of up to 40 kilometers per hour around the coasts of Kerala, Karnataka, and Lakshadweep. The Kerala Disaster Management Authority has issued weather warnings to residents in coastal areas, as well as advice to remove trees where there is a risk of them falling on houses and power lines.
