India and Afghanistan’s foreign ministers meet to discuss the situation in Afghanistan.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met his Afghan counterpart Mohammad Haneef Atmar  on Tuesday and discussed the situation in the war-torn country. Jaishankar arrived in Tajikistan on Tuesday for a two-day visit to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Council of Foreign Ministers and the SCO Contact Group on Afghanistan meetings.

The SCO contact group meeting on Afghanistan is significant because it comes at a time when global concerns are growing about Taliban fighters seizing control of a large number of areas in Afghanistan.

In the aftermath of intense fighting between Afghan forces and Taliban militants, India evacuated around 50 diplomats and security personnel from its consulate in Kandahar in a military plane.

Afghanistan has seen a series of terror attacks in recent weeks as the US prepares to withdraw its forces from the war-torn country by the end of August, capping a nearly two-decade military presence in the war-torn country.

India has played a significant role in ensuring Afghanistan’s peace and stability. It has already invested nearly USD 3 billion in the country’s aid and reconstruction efforts.

India has been supporting an Afghan-led, Afghan-owned, and Afghan-controlled national peace and reconciliation process.
