Mehul Choksi is granted bail by a Dominica court, but requests that he deposit $10,000 in Eastern Caribbean dollars as a surety.

New Delhi: Mehul Choksi, the fugitive diamantaire, has returned to Antigua and Barbuda after spending 51 days in detention in neighbouring Dominica for illegal entry, which his attorneys claim was part of a kidnapping plot. According to local media sources, a Dominica court granted bail to the absconding businessman on Monday (July 12), allowing him to return to Antigua for medical treatment.

Choksi has been ordered by the court to deposit $10,000 in Eastern Caribbean currencies as a guarantee for his bail, according to the Antigua News Room.

According to the sources, the absconding businessman attached his medical records to his bail application, including a CT scan that detected “mildly increasing hematoma.”

Doctors propose an urgent examination of Choksi’s medical status by a neurologist and a neurosurgery expert, according to the medical papers.

“Currently, the services are not available on the island (Dominica). Any and any courtesy shown to him will be much appreciated “Doctors Yerandy Galle Gutierrez and Rene Gilbert Veranes of Dominica’s Princess Margaret Hospital signed a CT scan report dated June 29.

Meanwhile, Mehul Choksi, who is wanted in India in connection with a Rs 13,500 crore PNB fraud case, unexpectedly vanished on May 23 from Antigua and Barbuda, where he has been a citizen since 2018.

After a probable love excursion with his supposed girlfriend, he was held in the neighbouring island country of Dominica for unlawful entry.

Choksi’s lawyers claimed that he was kidnapped from Jolly Harbour in Antigua by police officers dressed in Antiguan and Indian garb and transported to Dominica by boat.
