Here’s why Sanju Samson was ruled out of the first ODI between India and Sri Lanka in 2021

Sanju Samson, an Indian middle-order batsman, was ruled out of the first One-Day International against Sri Lanka at the R. Premadasa Stadium on Sunday (July 18) owing to a sprained ligament in his knee.

“Sanju Samson damaged a ligament in his knee and was thus unavailable for selection for this game,” the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said in a statement on Sunday. At the present, the medical staff is keeping an eye on his progress.”

The Indian cricket board did not say if Samson would play in the second One-Day International on July 20 at the same location.

Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav, meanwhile, made their One-Day International debuts, the former being only the second Indian and 16th worldwide to do so on his birthday. In 1990, Gursharan Singh became the first Indian to achieve so in a match against Australia in Hamilton.

After the 2019 World Cup, Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal played together in an ODI for the first time. The team known as ‘KulCha’ took the first three Lankan wickets between them, with Chinaman bowler Yadav taking two and Chahal taking the first wicket of Avishka Fernando.

The toss was won by Sri Lanka, and they chose to bat. After the toss, skipper Dasun Shanaka stated that the venue’s ideal history of batting first inspired him to adopt the decision.
