Assembly Session Commences Without Oommen Chandy After 53 Years, Stirring Controversy

Thiruvananthapuram : The Kerala Legislative Assembly witnesses a historic milestone today, as the commencement of its session marks the first time in 53 years without the presence of veteran politician Oommen Chandy. The assembly’s atmosphere is charged with controversies spanning issues of law and order and a polarizing mythological dispute. Of particular interest is the Chief Minister’s reaction, characterized by a notable silence on these matters of contention.

In the current ninth session of the fifteenth Kerala Legislative Assembly, scheduled to span twelve days, the customary order has been disrupted as the assembly pays tribute to the late former Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, and former Speaker Vaikom Purushothaman. Oommen Chandy’s absence from his longstanding seat in the opposition’s front row signifies a significant shift in the political landscape.

With an ambitious agenda of nineteen bills, the assembly addresses critical topics including the Aluva murder case, gang-related incidents, and the state’s pressing financial crisis. In a bid to challenge the ruling party, the opposition wields issues like the microphone dispute, allegations of unilateral rule, employment of AI surveillance, and the ongoing Muthalapozhi accident. The deliberation of the mythological controversy, however, remains undecided by the United Democratic Front (UDF).
