The dead toll from the Chembur wall fall in Mumbai has risen to 17,PM Narendra Modi announces Rs 5 lakh ex gratia

New Delhi: The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) declared an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh for the next of kin of those killed in Mumbai’s Vikroli and Chembur areas on Sunday (July 18, 2021). A cash help of Rs 50,000 has also been granted from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund for anyone harmed in the incidents (PMNRF).

“The PMNRF will provide Rs 2 lakh each to the next of kin of those who died as a result of Mumbai wall collapses. Those who have been injured will receive Rs. 50,000 “According to a tweet from the PMO.

Meanwhile, at least 17 people were killed on Sunday when a wall collapsed on some shanties in Mumbai’s Chembur’s Bharat Nagar area due to a landslide, according to ANI. Officials from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) confirmed that rescue operations for the trapped people are underway. According to Mumbai’s fire department, over 16 people were rescued from the rubble of a wall collapse in Chembur.

Five people have been declared dead in another incident that occurred in Vikroli.

“Five bodies have been recovered, and 5-6 more people are believed to be trapped in the rubble of the building that collapsed in Mumbai’s Vikhroli,” said Prashant Kadam, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 7).

Earlier on Saturday, the IMD issued an Orange alert for Mumbai, predicting rain for the next 24 hours. Waterlogging has been reported in several parts of the city. Rainwater has even entered many Mumbai homes.
