After a heavy rainstorm, the intensity of the rain in Mumbai has decreased; local trains and bus services have returned to normal

Mumbai: A day after a heavy downpour wreaked havoc in Mumbai, killing 30 people, the rain intensity decreased on Monday, bringing some relief to the city’s residents, officials said.

The local train and road transport services, which were severely impacted by the torrential rains and flooding on Sunday, were said to be back up and running.

On Sunday, 19 people were killed in Chembur’s Mahul area when a retaining wall collapsed on some houses following a landslide, 10 in suburban Vikhroli when some shanties collapsed, and one in Bhandup when a forest department wall collapsed.

According to a Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) official, no new deaths were reported on Monday.

The eastern suburbs of Mumbai received the most rainfall, 90.65 mm, in the 24-hour period ending at 8 a.m. on Monday, compared to 48.88 mm in the island city and 51.89 mm in the western suburbs, he said.

On Monday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a “orange alert” for Mumbai, predicting “heavy to very heavy rain at a few places.”

According to BMC officials, moderate to heavy rain/thundershowers are expected in the city and suburbs, with the possibility of very heavy to extremely heavy rain in isolated areas.

IMD alerts are color-coded from green to red. A ‘green’ alert means that there is no need for authorities to take any action, and the forecast is for light to moderate rain. A’red’ alert denotes a “warning” and requests that authorities “take action.” An ‘orange’ alert indicates that authorities should “be prepared.”

The suburban train services, which were suspended for a few hours on Sunday due to water-logging on tracks in some areas, were restored, according to Central Railway and Western Railway spokespersons.

Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) bus services were also restored, according to civic officials.

On Sunday evening, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray assessed the state of readiness of various government agencies to deal with any emergency.

Thackeray had directed that agencies be more vigilant, and that authorities keep an eye out for landslide-prone areas and dilapidated buildings.
