During a Parliament session, protesting farmers arrive at Jantar Mantar

On Thursday morning, about 200 protesting farmers gathered at Jantar Mantar in Delhi for a ‘Farmers Parliament.’ Farmer leader Rakesh Tikait, the BKU’s national spokesperson, has also arrived at Jantar Mantar.

Nearly 2,000 security officers, including Delhi Police and paramilitary troops, were deployed in the area.

Officials said security at Jantar Mantar in central Delhi has been beefed up in response to farmers’ protests against the Centre’s three agricultural reform measures during the monsoon session of Parliament.

Jantar Mantar is just a few steps from Parliament House, where the monsoon session is taking place.

A group of 200 farmers took buses from their Singhu border demonstration site to Jantar Mantar, where they protested from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Saiyuki Kisan Morcha (SKM), an umbrella organization of farmer unions that has led the protest against the three farm legislation, was urged to guarantee that all COVID-19 criteria would be respected and that the protest would be peaceful.

The authorities have granted protesting farmer unions permission to organize a demonstration in the city for the first time since the violence in the national capital on January 26 during a tractor rally.

Thousands of farmers from around the country have been protesting at three Delhi border posts — Singhu, Tikri, and Ghazipur — against three farm bills they allege will abolish the minimum support price system, leaving them at the mercy of large businesses.

Over ten rounds of talks with the government, which has been projecting the laws at massive agricultural reforms, have failed to break the two sides’ deadlock.
