In the Tokyo Olympics, 12 new COVID-19 cases were reported: total tally reaches 87

Tokyo: Twelve new positive COVID-19 cases  were reported by the Tokyo 2020 on Thursday, Olympic Games’ organizing committee, which includes two athletes residing in the Olympics village.

According to Kyodo News, 87 people associated with the Games have tested positive for the virus in Tokyo since visitors began arriving for the 2020 Games.

Many athletes have begun to withdraw from the Games prior to their departure after testing positive for COVID-19, including world number one skeet shooter Amber Hill, who tested positive for COVID-19 in the United Kingdom.

Amber, 23, was scheduled to compete in the Women’s Olympic Skeet competition, in which she had previously finished as a finalist in Rio 2016. The British Olympic Association confirmed that no replacement athlete has been chosen in Amber’s place.

Chile’s Olympic committee confirmed on Wednesday that a taekwondo athlete from Chile has already withdrawn from the Tokyo Olympics after testing positive for the virus. This was the first known instance of an athlete withdrawing from the games after arriving in Japan’s capital.
