Kerala Braces for Heavy Rains: Orange Alert Issued in Four Districts, Fishing Restricted

Kerala has once again been hit by heavy rainfall. An orange alert has been issued for Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, and Idukki districts due to the possibility of intense rainfall, expecting up to 20 cm within 24 hours. All other districts have received a yellow warning.

A cyclonic circulation near the Kerala-Lakshadweep coast is likely to transform into a low-pressure system by Tuesday, moving westward with increasing strength. The intensity of rainfall hinges on its proximity to the Kerala coast; if it moves away, rainfall is expected to decrease. However, if it stays nearby, heavy rainfall will persist.

Notably, fishing is prohibited along the Kerala coast until Tuesday and on the Lakshadweep coast until October 18 due to the weather conditions.

Between October 1 and 15, Kerala experienced a 19 percent surplus in rainfall. While substantial, the official declaration of the arrival of the northeast monsoon is still pending.
