Severe Weather Threat Prompts Closures and Flight Disruptions Across Eastern US

Washington: The threat of a hurricane has led to significant disruptions in the eastern United States. In response, government offices in Washington DC are closing early, and businesses in the region are also shutting down due to potential severe weather conditions, including storms and hail.

The impact of the storm has been substantial, with more than 200,000 homes and businesses in Maryland and Virginia suffering damage from strong winds and lightning. Additionally, over 800,000 customers are without power in various parts of the Atlantic and southern states. Fortunately, there have been no major issues reported in the capital city.

The National Weather Service states that around 29.5 million people from Alabama to western New York have been affected by this storm. As a result of heavy rainfall, flight services have been suspended at major airports in New York, Washington, Philadelphia, and Atlanta.

Various public facilities such as museums, libraries, pools, and the National Zoo have been closed, and employees have been advised to leave by three o’clock. The aviation sector has taken a hit, with over 2,600 US flights canceled, including 102 flights originating from Washington airports. Furthermore, around 7,700 US flights are experiencing delays due to the heavy rain.
