Kerala’s weekend lockdown starts today: Check out what’s available and what’s not

After analysing the COVID situation in the state, the Kerala government has enforced a full lockdown for this weekend, July 24 and 25.

The state government has also asked health department employees to undertake mass COVID testing with an objective of 3 lakh tests during the weekend lockdown.

However, districts with a seven-day test positivity rate (TPR) of more than 10% would receive special attention.

In addition, the state government has directed district collectors to define and demarcate micro-containment zones on a district-by-district basis.

The state administration issued a new decree on Friday (July 23), stating that the current category-based system of exclusions and limits will remain.

There would be no further concessions.

On the 24th and 25th of July, there would be a complete lockdown, with the same parameters as the previous weekend lockdowns.

The current classification of LSGI regions based on the seven-day average test positive rate (TPR) will be maintained.

Exemptions and limits that already apply to the relevant category regions will be maintained.

On Friday, the Health Department has been ordered to begin a major testing campaign.

For effective pandemic containment, the number of daily tests must be increased promptly to peak testing capacity.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan explained that the existing limits would be extended for another week because the average test positive rate was remained above 10%.

Kerala reported 17,481 new COVID-19 cases and 105 deaths earlier this week, bringing the total number of cases and deaths to 32,05,197 and 15,617, respectively. The test positivity rate (TPR) remained near 12% for the second day in a row, with more than 2,000 cases reported in three districts across the state.
