Mirabai Chanu wins silver to open India’s account at the Olympics in Tokyo

Mirabai Chanu, a weightlifter from India, won silver in the women’s 49kg category at the Tokyo Olympics on Saturday.

The Manipuri weightlifter exorcised the ghosts of a disappointing Rio Games and penned a new chapter in the country’s weightlifting history.

Only China’s world record holder Hou Zhihui finished ahead of Chanu.

Karnam Malleswari is the only other Indian weightlifter to have won an Olympic medal, a bronze in the 69kg category at the 2000 Sydney Games, when the weightlifting arena was first opened to women.

Chanu had proven her worth as a fighter and serious contender following the Rio Games. She has medaled in almost every major event, including gold at the World Championship and Commonwealth Games, as well as bronze at the Asian Championship.
