Mirabai Chanu’s family’s reaction to her silver medal win at the Tokyo Olympics has gone viral – WATCH
On Saturday (July 24), India’s ace weightlifter Mirabai Chanu made history by becoming the first Indian weightlifter to win silver in the 49-kg weightlifting category at the Tokyo Olympics. Mirabai, a 26-year-old Manipur native, finished second behind China’s Hou Zihui (210kg — 94 snatch & 116 clean & jerk) with a total of 202kg (87 in snatch and 115 in clean and jerk).
Mirabai won India’s first medal in Tokyo and became the country’s second weightlifter to win an Olympic medal. Karnam Malleswari won bronze in the 69kg category at the 2000 Sydney Games, the first time the weightlifting arena was open to women.
Meanwhile, Mirabai’s family and neighbours erupted in joy as they witnessed her win the silver medal for the country.
