Shaving rather than waxing? Keep these four suggestions in mind

Even though the lockdown restrictions have been relaxed slightly, many women are still putting off that long-awaited trip to the parlour. That hasn’t stopped them from taking matters into their own hands and caring for their skin and hair with a variety of DIY homemade remedies and packs. However, waxing body hair at home can be difficult (read: messy), so shaving is a better option. But are we doing it correctly? We ask because many of us get red bumps, cuts, and strawberry skin after shaving our bodies. If you are experiencing any of these or other skin issues, don’t worry because we have you covered! These simple tips will help you have a smooth and safe shave.

Before shaving, exfoliate your skin.

One of the most important steps is exfoliation. This is because you don’t want your razor blades to become dull from being clogged with dead skin cells while shaving. Furthermore, exfoliated skin is smoother and provides a better shaving experience. For best results, use a homemade body scrub or your loofah.

Take note of the direction of your hair growth.

This is essential not only for waxing but also for shaving. The key is to shave in the opposite direction of your hair’s growth. Legs typically grow downward; to correct this, shave in the opposite direction, i.e. upward. After that, re-run your razor, but this time in the same direction. This will aid in the removal of the roots.

Continue to replace your razors.

A razor typically lasts 10-12 shaves, which is why you should replace it on a regular basis. Also, make certain that it is not rusted. It is best to choose razors that allow you to easily replace the blades. After shaving, always pat dry your razors to ensure there is no moisture left in them.

Make use of shaving gel.

While soap is a quick lubricant, it is not always the best. Soak yourself in water before shaving, and then apply a shaving gel or foam. Make a lather and shave in the opposite direction of your hair growth. This not only results in a smoother experience, but it also aids in the prevention of after-shave burns and irritations in general. Finally, rinse the pores with cold water to close them.
