The brain has a vulnerability to Alzheimer’s disease and schizophrenia

A study involving 484 healthy people aged eight to 85 years discovered that the human brain has a vulnerability to Alzheimer’s disease and schizophrenia.
The British researchers investigated how the brain naturally changes as people age.
According to the BBC, the images revealed that parts of the brain that were the last to develop were also the first to show signs of age-related decline.
When an Oxford team led by Gwenaelle Douaud examined scans of patients with Alzheimer’s disease and scans of patients with schizophrenia, they discovered that the same brain regions were affected in both groups.

The findings indicate a link between Alzheimer’s disease and schizophrenia.
‘Early doctors referred to schizophrenia as ‘premature dementia,’ according to professor Hugh Perry of the Medical Research Council. ‘Until now, we had no clear evidence that the same parts of the brain might be associated with two such different diseases,’ he added.
The detailed study revealed previously unknown links between brain development and disease processes.
