The death toll from landslides and floods in Maharashtra has risen to 149, with the state establishing NDRF-style mechanisms in affected districts

New Delhi: On Sunday, the death toll from rain-related incidents in Maharashtra, including floods and landslides, climbed to 149. As a result of the recurrence of these disasters, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has announced that a separate NDRF-style mechanism will be established in all affected districts.

During his visit to flood-ravaged Chiplun, Thackeray also stated that a financial review of the state’s flood damage will be conducted in the coming days.

Given the frequency of these disasters, a system similar to the NDRF will be established in all affected districts. Following Thackeray’s visit, the CMO Maharashtra stated that the SDRF would be strengthened further.

“We will also put in place a flood control system to ensure that such incidents do not occur again,” the CMO Maharashtra added.

According to the CMO Maharashtra, Thackeray has also stated that haphazard announcements about compensation will not be made for the sake of popularity, and that they will conduct a thorough review of the flood situation throughout the state before making any announcements.

“We will also review the assistance that needs to be sought from the Central Government,” Maharashtra’s chief minister said.

Thackeray stated that he has already given the administration instructions to ensure that technical issues do not stall compensation.

“Directions have been given to district collectors to provide food, medicines, clothing, and other essentials to those affected as soon as possible,” he added.

Heavy rains earlier this week triggered landslides in some areas of Maharashtra, the deadliest of which occurred in Taliye village in the Raigad district.

On Sunday, 36 more bodies were discovered in the Satara and Raigad districts, while 64 people remain unaccounted for. So far, 50 people have been injured as a result of these incidents. A total of 2,29,074 people have been evacuated to safer locations from the affected districts in the Konkan region and western Maharashtra.

According to the state government, 60 people have died in Raigad, 21 in Ratnagiri, 41 in Satara, 12 in Thane, seven in Kolhapur, four in suburban Mumbai, and two each in Sindhudurg and Pune.

The torrential rains affected 875 villages in Kolhapur, Sangli, Satara, and Pune.

Uddhav Thackeray is scheduled to visit Western Maharashtra on Monday to assess the damage caused by the recent rains.
