Stan Swamy, an activist arrested in the Elgar Parishad case, has died.

The lawyer for activist Stan Swamy, who was arrested in connection with the Elgar Parishad case, has informed the Bombay High Court that he has died.

Swamy, an 84-year-old Jesuit priest, had been on mechanical ventilation since Sunday. Following a court order on May 28, he was being treated at Mumbai’s Holy Family Hospital.

Swamy filed a new bail petition in the Supreme Court last week, challenging a section of the UAPA that imposes stringent bail conditions.

Swamy had repeatedly complained about insufficient health care in the Taloja prison in Navi Mumbai, where he was being held as an undertrial.
