Assam police officers have been killed, and 50 others have been injured, as violence near the Mizoram border escalates

Guwahati: At least six Assam Police personnel were killed in firing by miscreants from neighbouring Mizoram on Monday, as violence along the inter-state border in Cachar district escalated, according to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

At least 50 personnel, including Cachar Superintendent of Police Nimbalkar Vaibhav Chandrakant, were injured in the firing and stone-pelting, according to a senior Assam Police officer who is still inside the forest amid continuous firing from across the border.

“I’m deeply saddened to report that six brave jawans from @assampolice have given their lives defending our state’s constitutional boundary on the Assam-Mizoram border. My heartfelt condolences to the families who have lost loved ones “Sarma sent out a tweet.

When civil officials from both sides were holding a dialogue to sort out their differences, miscreants from across the border suddenly began firing, according to the senior police officer.

“I can’t say how many people have been hurt right now, but I’m guessing at least 50.” “Our SP was also hit in the leg by a bullet during the shooting,” the officer said over the phone.

While hiding inside a forest, the IPS officer spoke to PTI while firing could be heard in the background.

“I, along with the rest of the team, are still in the foothills.” Mr Ralte, Mizoram’s Kolasib SP, and his additional SP were in conversation with us. The IGP, DC, and SP of the Assam Police Department were all present and discussing a solution to the problem.

“We did not allow our citizens to visit there, but their citizens were constantly throwing stones. Many people were hurt. They were also using catapults to launch marbles at us. They opened fire from the hilltop while we were talking. They opened fire on us while we were in the meeting “He stated.

According to the officer, the Assam Police team “somehow” managed to take position and begin retaliatory firing.

According to Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH) Principal Babul Bezbarua, at least 50 police officers were admitted with bullet wounds.

“There is a steady influx of injured personnel. As we speak, another vehicle with a few more injured people arrives at the hospital. They’ve all been hit by bullets and pellets. We’ve summoned all of the doctors and formed various teams to treat the injured “He stated.

A senior doctor, who did not want to be identified, said the Cachar SP’s condition was critical, with one bullet striking his thigh and injuring him in the abdomen.

“We infused him with one unit of blood after he lost blood. I’m guessing more blood will be needed “He continued.
