Naomi Osaka has been ruled out of the Tokyo Olympics
TOKYO: The host country’s Olympic superstar has withdrawn from the Games in Tokyo.
On Tuesday, Naomi Osaka was defeated 6-1, 6-4 by former French Open finalist Marketa Vondrousova of the Czech Republic in the third round of the Tokyo tennis tournament.
Osaka, who was born in Japan and raised in the United States, struggled with her normally reliable groundstrokes.
Vondrousova, ranked 42nd, produced a series of drop-shot winners and other deft shots that forced Osaka out of her comfort zone.
Following a two-month mental-health break, Osaka won her first two matches in straight sets. However, conditions were different on Tuesday, with the roof closed due to rain outside.
