A cloudburst in Himachal Pradesh causes flash floods, leaving ten people dead and one injured
New Delhi: A cloudburst in Himachal Pradesh’s tribal district of Lahaul-Spiti on Tuesday caused flash floods; approximately ten people are reported missing, with one injured.
The incident occurred on Tuesday around 8 p.m. in Udaipur, Lahaul, according to state disaster management director Sudesh Kumar Mokhta. Two labourer tents and a private JCB were washed away. Around ten people have gone missing, according to reports.
Mohammad Altaaf, a 19-year-old labourer, was injured. The Jammu and Kashmir resident has been referred to a nearby hospital.
A search operation involving state police and ITBP teams is underway, but a heavy flow of water on Tuesday night hampered the search operations. The search will resume on Wednesday, according to a senior disaster management official.
The water level in the Bhaga river has risen significantly as a result of heavy rainfall in Himachal Pradesh. Sudesh Kumar Mokhta, Himachal Pradesh Disaster Management Director, told PTI on Tuesday that people from Lahaul-Darcha Spiti’s village had been evacuated.
Meanwhile, over 60 tourists are reportedly stranded in Kinnaur after multiple landslides hit the state, blocking roads. On Sunday, heavy boulders fell on a tempo traveller near Basteri in Kinnaur, killing up to nine tourists.
Multiple landslides caused by rains occurred near Basteri on the Sangla-Chitkul road, resulting in the collapse of a bridge and vehicle damage.
