Basavaraj Bommai will take the oath as Karnataka Chief Minister today

Bengaluru: After days of speculation, BJP veteran BS Yediyurappa resigned as Karnataka Chief Minister on July 26. Basavaraj Somappa Bommai has been appointed as the next Chief Minister of Karnataka, and the 61-year-old leader is expected to take the oath today (July 28) at 11 a.m., according to sources.

On Tuesday, the BJP high command appointed SR Bommai, the son of former Karnataka Chief Minister SR Bommai, as Karnataka’s 23rd Chief Minister. Bommai is a mechanical engineering graduate and former Janata Dal (United) leader (July 27). Basavaraj Bommai stated shortly after his election as Karnataka Chief Minister that he will work for the welfare of the poor. “In the given situation, it is a significant responsibility. I will work hard to improve the lives of the poor. Governance will be pro-people and pro-poor people. We will take all necessary steps to combat COVID-9 and floods in the state “He stated.

Bommai, who was born on January 28, 1960, is of the Sadara Lingayat caste, as is his predecessor Yediyurappa. The Lingayats are Karnataka’s largest community, accounting for nearly 17 percent of the population, and can influence the outcome of 35 to 40 percent of Assembly seats. For a long time, the community has supported the ruling party. Former Karnataka Home Minister Bommai is a senior BJP leader who previously held many portfolios in the fourth Yediyurappa government, including Irrigation, Law, Parliamentary Affairs, and the Karnataka Legislature.

He has also served as the District Incharge Minister for Haveri and Udupi. Between 2008 and 2013, he was the Minister of Water Resources and Cooperation. Bommai is known to be Yediyurappa’s close aide and follower. Many in the BJP believe Bommai’s appointment as his successor is a victory for Yediyurappa. Bommai is also known to maintain close ties with the party’s high command in Delhi, as well as leaders from various communities within the party. Shiggaon’s three-time member of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly since 2008 was a member of the Karnataka Legislative Council from 1998 to 2008.
