Kerala reports: 5 new Zika virus cases, total to 56

Thiruvananthapuram: Health Minister Veena George announced that five more people in Kerala had tested positive for the Zika virus.

A 38-year-old woman from Aanayara, a 17-year-old Petta resident, a 26-year-old Karamana resident, a 12-year-old Poojappura resident, and a 37-year-old Killippala resident all tested positive for the virus.

The five were found to be infected with the virus during tests at the virology lab at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College. As a result, the number of Zika virus cases in the state has risen to 56.

There are currently 8 patients identified in the state.

The patients are stable, according to the health minister.

On July 8, the state’s first case of the mosquito-borne viral infection was confirmed in a 24-year-old pregnant woman.

The Thiruvananthapuram Municipal Corporation and district administrations have increased preventive activities, including fogging for the next few days and the establishment of a control room, as part of efforts to reduce the spread of the mosquito-borne disease.
