Kerala’s daily COVID tally now accounts for half of all positive cases in India

Thiruvananthapuram: According to data released by the Union Health Ministry on Wednesday morning, Kerala has received 22,129 new COVID cases in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of cases in India to 43,654. This means that Kerala had more than half of the cases, which is the first time this has happened.

On Tuesday, there were 3,99,436 active cases in the United States, while there were 1,45,371 in Kerala. Similarly, the national test positivity rate for Tuesday was 2.51%, while in Kerala it was 12.35%.

However, this issue came up in the Kerala Assembly on Tuesday, when veteran legislator P K Kunhalikutty of the opposition IUML slammed Vijayan for what was going on in Kerala, and said there was something wrong with the decisions of the monitoring committee, which oversees Covid affairs on a daily basis.

However, Vijayan defended the way things are being handled, blaming the opposition for always being on a fact-finding mission. He stated on Tuesday that Covid has affected 80% of the population in many states, but only 49% of the population in Kerala.

During the first wave, Kerala was the focus of all eyes from around the world on how the state was fighting the pandemic, and then-State Finance Minister Thomas Issac went so far as to say that it was a feather in the cap of how the first Pinarayi Vijayan government had managed.
