Earthquake strikes Haryana’s Jhajjar, causing tremors in the Delhi-NCR area

On Monday (July 5) night, medium-intensity earthquake tremors were felt in Delhi and the NCR, prompting people to flee their homes. Tremors were reported in the national capital and parts of Gurugram around 10:40 p.m.

Several residents of Delhi and Haryana’s Gurugram reported the tremors on social media.

The National Center for Seismology (NCS) reviewed the reports and confirmed that a magnitude 3.7 earthquake struck Jhajjar in Haryana at 10.36 p.m. on Monday. The 5 km deep epicentre has been located 10 kilometres north of Jhajjar.

The National Centre of Seismology tweeted, “Earthquake of Magnitude:3.7, Occurred on 05-07-2021, 22:36:54 IST, Lat: 28.70 & Long: 76.65, Depth: 5 Km, Location: 10km N of Jhajjar, Haryana.”

On June 20, a low-intensity earthquake with a magnitude of 2.1 struck the national capital’s Punjabi Bagh neighbourhood. Since last year, the Delhi-NCR region has experienced a few earthquakes, the majority of which were minor in magnitude.

Following a series of tremors in the NCR region from April to August last year, the NCS has deployed additional earthquake recording instruments to closely monitor seismic activity in and around Delhi.

Active fault signatures have been observed in a variety of locations, including Wazirabad, Timarpur, and Kamla-Nehru-Ridge in Delhi; Jhunjhunu and Alwar districts in Rajasthan; Sonipat, Sohna, Gurugram, Rohtak, Rewari, and Nuh districts in Haryana; and Baghpat district in Uttar Pradesh.

From April to August 2020, the National Capital Region of Delhi and its surroundings experienced minor and minor magnitude earthquakes. These earthquakes had epicentres in northeast Delhi, Rohtak, Sonipat, Baghpat, Faridabad, and Alwar.
