PV Sindhu advances to the quarterfinals of the Tokyo Olympics after defeating Mia Blichfeldt

P V Sindhu, the reigning world champion, advanced to the quarterfinals of the women’s singles after defeating Denmark’s Mia Blichfeldt in straight games on Thursday at the Tokyo Olympics badminton competition.

In a 41-minute match, the 26-year-old Indian, who won silver at the 2016 Rio Olympics, defeated 13th seed Blichfeldt 21-15 21-13.

Sindhu will face the winner of the match between Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi and Korea’s Kim Gaeun.

Sindhu won Group J by defeating world No. 34 Hong Kong’s NY Cheung 21-9 21-16 on Wednesday.

Sindhu is the lone Indian badminton hope still in the running after B Sai Praneeth’s Olympic debut in the men’s competition ended in tragedy.

He was defeated in straight games by Mark Caljouw of the Netherlands, his second defeat in Group D.

The men’s doubles team of Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy were heartbroken on Tuesday after failing to advance to the quarterfinals despite winning two matches in their group.
