Railways announces cash awards for athletes and coaches competing in the Tokyo Olympics

New Delhi: The railways announced special cash awards for its athletes and officials competing in the Tokyo Olympics on Wednesday, including a Rs 3 crore prize for a gold medal winner.

The Railway Sports Promotion Board has 25 athletes, five coaches, and a physiotherapist representing India in the Tokyo Olympics, which began on July 23.

The railways is one of the most significant contributors to the Olympics, accounting for approximately 20% of the athletes in the Indian contingent.

“To boost their morale, the Ministry of Railways has announced the following special cash awards in favour of Indian Railways athletes and officials participating in the ongoing Tokyo Olympic Games 2020 as per the following details, over and above existing policy,” the ministry said in a statement.

A gold medalist will receive Rs 3 crore, a silver medalist will receive Rs 2 crore, and a bronze medalist will receive Rs 1 crore. If an athlete finishes in the top eight in his event, he will receive Rs 35 lakh, and each participant will receive Rs 7.5 lakh.

A gold Medalist’s coach will receive Rs 25 lakh, a silver medalist’s coach will receive Rs 20 lakh, and a bronze Medalist’s coach will receive Rs 15 lakh.

The coaches of the other athletes who compete will each receive Rs 7.5 lakh.
“This liberalised promotion policy will act as an incentive to the country’s elite sportspersons/coaches and reaffirms railways’ commitment to the promotion of sports in the country,” according to the statement.
