Truecaller Enhances Spam Call Protection with New AI Feature

Truecaller has introduced a new artificial intelligence (AI) feature aimed at automatically blocking all spam calls, providing enhanced security against spammers and potential scammers. This new feature, exclusive to the Truecaller Android app, introduces a ‘Max’ protection tier for spam calls, available only to paid subscribers of the app. Notably, this development comes shortly after Truecaller’s recent introduction of call recordings and AI-powered transcriptions in India. Users can access the new feature by navigating to Settings > Block, where they will find the option to enable the ‘Max’ protection level, which automatically blocks calls from all known spammers. However, the company warns that legitimate business calls may also be blocked with this setting.

While the new AI-powered spam blocking feature offers improved protection against spam calls, it also raises questions about how Truecaller identifies such numbers. Although users can report calls as spam, the company has not disclosed its exact methodology for identifying spam calls. Moreover, the ‘Max’ feature is currently available only on Truecaller’s Android app, as iOS restrictions prevent caller ID apps from automatically blocking spam calls. To access this feature, users must subscribe to Truecaller’s Premium plan, which in India starts at a monthly cost of Rs. 75 and an annual price of Rs. 529.
