Kamalpreet Kaur advances to the finals of the Discus Throw at the Tokyo Olympics, while Seema Punia out

In her third attempt, Indian athlete Kamalpreet Kaur reached the final of the Tokyo 2020 discus throw event, touching a mark of 64 metres. She is only the second Indian thrower to accomplish this.

Krishna Punia had previously achieved this success at the 2012 London Olympic Games.

In her second attempt at qualifying for the Tokyo 2020 women’s disc throw Group B, Kamalpreet threw 63.97m.

Valerie Allman of the United States took first place with a throw of 66.42 metres. She is the only competitor in the competition who has thrown a distance of more than 64 metres.

Seema Punia, India’s other medal contender at the event, was eliminated after finishing sixth in her Group A.

With a best throw of 60.57 metres, the veteran Discus thrower missed the cut.

Sandra Perkovic of Croatia won Group A with a throw of 63.75 metres, followed by Kristin Pudenz of Germany with a throw of 63.53 metres.

None of the throwers in Group A were able to break the 64m barrier.
