Sindhu loses in the semi-finala, to play for bronze in Tokyo 2020

P V Sindhu of India lost to world No. 1 Tai Tzu Ying of Chinese Taipei in the Olympic badminton semifinals here on Saturday.

Tai Tzu, who trailed for the majority of the first game, won it 21-18 with big points. In the second game, she took command and won 21-12.

Sindhu had not dropped a game in the Games prior to the semifinal.

On Sunday, Tai Tzu will compete for the gold medal against China’s Chen Yufei. In the first semifinal, Yufei defeated compatriot He Bingjiao 21-16, 13-21, 21-12.

Tai Tzu had a 15-3 head-to-head advantage over Sindhu going into Saturday’s match. She also defeated Sindhu in the 2018 Asian Games final.

Sindhu, who is 26 years old, is the current world champion. The Hyderabadi is aiming for a second consecutive Olympic medal. In the 2016 Rio Olympics, she was defeated by Spain’s Carolina Marin in the final. She will now compete for bronze against Bingjiao.
