Full lockdown in Kochi Corporation following TPR increase: What’s allowed and what’s not

Kochi Corporation, which includes Kochi city and its suburbs, has gone into complete lockdown after the test positivity percentage in the local body limit surpassed 10%. Kochi Corporation is currently classified as Category C, indicating that coronavirus infection is widespread in the area. A local body is classified as A, B, C, or D depending on its average test positivity rate, which is less than 5%, between 5% and 10%, between 10% and 15%, and greater than 15%. Edapally, Palarivattom, Vytilla, Kaloor, Panampilly Nagar, Thevara, Thoppumpady, Fort Kochi, Mattancherry, Palluruthy, and Edakochi are among the 74 wards that make up Kochi Corporation. Here’s a look at what is allowed and not allowed in the regions.

What is permitted? 
> Shops selling necessities may be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. every day.
> Stores that cater to weddings (textiles, jewelry, footwear), students (books), and repair services can operate on Fridays from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. with up to 50% of their employees/workers.

What is not permitted?

> The remainder of the relaxations applicable to Category A and B local governments will not be permitted. These are as follows:

Outdoor sports, including morning walks, will be prohibited.

> Liquor stores and bars will stay completely closed.

All non-essential services offices, both private and public, will be closed.

Meanwhile, in light of the increase in COVID-19 cases, a review conference with the Kochi Corporation Mayor, Ernakulam District Collector, and Kochi City Police Commissioner was convened on July 31. The meeting’s goal was to devise solutions that would not jeopardize the running of Ernakulam market, particularly Broadway, one of the main shopping areas in central Kerala. With Onam, one of Kerala’s most important festivals, approaching, traders have great hopes of reviving their business, which has been harmed by the pandemic.

Given the circumstances, Kochi Corporation has decided to launch a major COVID-19 testing and vaccination campaign in the marketplace. “A COVID-19 test will be administered to employees of all establishments in Ernakulam Market and Broadway. A special immunization program for 2,000 people will begin on Monday (August 2) for market workers and traders, according to a Kochi Corporation statement.

However, due to the possibility of a rush in the market during the Onam days, which fall during the third week of August, traffic limits are also enforced on the traffic inside Broadway and the market. Stalls that encroach on the pathways will be prohibited, according to the statement.
