The Centre has launched the ‘Sandes’ messaging app; learn how to download the homegrown messaging platform

New Delhi: The Indian government has finally launched its own messaging platform, Sandes, in an attempt to compete with the popular app WhatsApp. The launch of the in-house messaging platform comes at a time when the Facebook-owned app is embroiled in the ‘Pegasus’ spyware scandal.

The Sandes app was initially launched by the Indian government to provide a secure communication channel for central and state government employees. In August 2020, the National Informatics Centre (NIC) released the first version of the homegrown messaging app.

With the public release of the Sandes app, however, anyone can use the messaging platform. Users can sign up for the Sandes app using their email addresses or phone numbers.

“Sandes is an open source-based, secure, cloud-enabled platform,” said Rajeev Chandrasekhar, the junior IT Minister. The app is hosted by the government and runs on government infrastructure, ensuring that control is retained solely by the government.”

How do download Sandes?

The Sandes app is now available for both Android and iOS users. Depending on your operating system, you can easily download the app from the Google Play Store or the Apple iOS Store.

Features of the Sandes app

The Sandes app is similar to other messaging apps in that it allows users to communicate in person or in groups. You can also send media files and documents using the messaging app.

The Sandes app, like WhatsApp, allows users to make voice or video calls to their contacts. The egovernance app has also been integrated into the app.

You can mark a message as confidential before sharing it with your contact, which is one of the most unique features of the Sandes app. The recipient will not be able to share a confidential message.
