Imran Khan’s official residence is for rent in a financially strapped Pakistan

New Delhi: Pakistan has put its Prime Minister’s official residence in Islamabad up for rent, a move that comes as the country faces a severe financial crisis.

Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan vacated the residence in 2019 when the ruling party announced its plan to convert the Prime Minster’s House into a university. Khan has been living at his Bani Gala home and only visits the Prime Minister’s office.

According to Samaa TV, the government has instead decided to rent out the property. The cabinet has decided to allow cultural, fashion, educational, and other events to be held on the premises.

According to sources cited by local media, the Prime Minister’s House auditorium, two guest wings, and a lawn can be rented out to generate funds.

“Two committees have been formed for this purpose, to ensure that the PM House’s discipline and decorum are not violated during the events,” Saama TV reported.

Pakistan’s economy has shrunk by $19 billion in the last three years, despite Khan’s austerity measures to reduce government spending in order to provide some relief to the country’s failing economy.
