India loses to Argentina in the Women’s Hockey semifinals, forcing them to play for bronze against Great Britain

The Indian women’s hockey team may have taken an early lead, but they were defeated 1-2 by Argentina in the semi-finals of the ongoing Tokyo Olympics on Wednesday at the Oi Hockey Stadium North Pitch. The team led by Rani Rampal will now face Great Britain in the bronze medal match on Friday. Argentina, on the other hand, will face the Netherlands in the gold medal match on the same day.

India went on to take an early lead in the game, with Gurjit Kaur scoring on a PC in the second minute of the first quarter. There were no more goals in the first quarter, and India maintained its lead after 15 minutes.

However, Argentina skipper Noel Barrionuevo equalised for the side in the second half, bringing the score to 1-1. The defences of India and Argentina were strong in the second half, and as a result, the score was tied at halftime.

Argentina went on to take a 2-1 lead in the third quarter thanks to Barrionuevo’s second goal of the game. India failed to equalise in the third quarter, and Rani Rampal’s team was left with everything to play for in the final 15 minutes.

Argentina held its own and advanced to the finals of the women’s hockey event in the showpiece event, despite India’s efforts in the fourth and final quarter. (ANI)
