Borgohain earned a bronze medal after losing to Turkey’s Busenaz Surmeneli in the women’s welterweight (64-69kg) semi-finals on Wednesday at the Tokyo Olympics. Borgohain was defeated by Busenaz Surmeneli in a 5-0 unanimous decision. As she asserted her dominance, all five judges ruled in favour of the Turkish pugilist.
Borgohain used a good strategy in round one, refusing to let the Turkish boxer take control. But, as the judges ruled the round in her favour, Busenaz showed her class and demolished the Indian’s defence.
Surmeneli dominated the second round, which began exactly where the first one ended. To make matters worse for Borgohain, she was penalised in that round. Busenaz was even more ruthless and clinical in the final round, burying any hopes the 23-year-old Indian had of making a comeback.
