Bangladeshi actress Pori Moni arrested, drugs and liquor recovered from residence

Dhaka: Popular Bangladeshi actress Pori Moni has been detained by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), the police’s elite anti-crime unit, after alleging a rape and murder plot at the Boat Club here on June 8.

Commander Khandaker Al Moin, Director of Legal and Media Wing of RAB, confirmed to IANS that she was taken to the elite force’s headquarters around 9 p.m. on Wednesday night, following a four-hour raid in her residence at Banani in Dhaka.

Prior to her arrest, the RAB claimed that during the raid, they recovered drugs and liquor from her possession.

She will appear in court in Dhaka on Thursday morning.

Shamsunnahar Smrity, also known as Pori Moni, claimed on June 8 that she was assaulted by Nasir Uddin Mahmood, a businessman and politician who was a former president of the Boat Club and also a director of Gulshan All Community Club.

Mahmood was accused of sexually assaulting her at the Boat Club.

However, she did not file a case because the accused is a close friend of Bangladesh’s Inspector General of Police, Benazir Ahmed.

After confessing to their crimes of women trafficking and drug dealing, Mahmood, three women, and his close associate Tuhin Siddique Omi, a drug dealer, were arrested by the detective branch of police.

Pori Moni was accused of vandalism at the Gulshan All Community Club on June 7 night by K.M. Alamgir Iqbal, the club’s President, in a press conference a week later.

In the case filed under the Narcotic Act, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammed Jashim granted bail.

Mahmood and his associates Lipi Akhter, Sumi Akhter, and Nazma Amin Snigdha were subsequently released.

Mahmood was not imprisoned, but was held in police custody for nearly 15 days.

Pori Moni urged police for assistance on Facebook Live from her home on Wednesday afternoon, saying: “You understand my predicament, brother. There is a police station in Banani, but no one is coming from there. I require their assistance. I was experiencing apprehension. I couldn’t get out of bed for three days.”

The actress also claimed that someone had been knocking on her house’s gate for 20 minutes.

“I’m too scared to open the door. They are claiming to be police officers. However, when I contacted the Banani police station, they stated that no officers had been dispatched from their station.”

“From the beginning, I was terrified of death. Someone wishes to assassinate me. What would I do if someone came to kill me using the police identity?”
