PM Narendra Modi will lead the open debate on maritime security at the United Nations Security Council today, making him the first Indian Prime Minister to do so
New Delhi: PM Narendra Modi will preside over a UN Security Council high-level Open Debate on maritime security today (August 9, 2021), becoming the first Indian Prime Minister to do so.
Russian President Vladimir Putin will be among the world leaders participating in the virtual meeting, which is scheduled to begin at 5:30 pm IST. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Niger’s President Mohamed Bazoum, Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta, Vietnam’s Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, and the DRC’s President Felix Tshisekedi are among the dignitaries expected to attend.
Several high-level briefers from the UN System and key regional organisations are also expected to attend.
The Open Debate on ‘Enhancing Maritime Security – A Case for International Cooperation,’ according to the Prime Minister’s Office, will focus on ways to effectively counter maritime crime and insecurity, as well as strengthening maritime coordination.
According to the PMO, this will be the first time that maritime security will be discussed as an exclusive agenda item in such a high-level open debate in a ‘holistic manner.’
“Given that no country can address the diverse aspects of maritime security alone,” the statement continued, “it is critical that the United Nations Security Council consider this subject in a holistic manner.”
The event will be streamed live on the website of the United Nations Security Council.
