Today, Narendra Modi will launch Ujjwala 2.0; know about the benefits

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch Ujjwala 2.0 (Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana – PMUY) by handing over LPG connections via video conferencing on Tuesday at 12:30 PM in Mahoba, Uttar Pradesh.

The Prime Minister will interact with Ujjwala beneficiaries and address the nation during the event, according to an official release from the Prime Minister’s Office.

During the Ujjwala 1.0 launch in 2016, a target of providing Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) connections to five crore women from below-poverty-line (BPL) households was set.

Following that, in April 2018, the scheme was expanded to include women beneficiaries from seven additional categories (SC/ST, PMAY, AAY, Most Backward Classes, Tea Garden, Forest Dwellers, Islands).

In addition, the target was lowered to eight crore LPG connections. This goal was met in August 2019, seven months ahead of schedule.

Provision for an additional one crore LPG connections under the PMUY scheme was announced in the Union budget for fiscal year 2021-22. These one crore additional PMUY connections (under Ujjwala 2.0) are intended to provide deposit-free LPG connections to low-income families who were not eligible for the previous phase of PMUY.

Along with a deposit-free LPG connection, Ujjwala 2.0 will provide the beneficiaries with a free first refill and hotplate. The enrollment process will also be simplified. Migrants will not be required to submit ration cards or address proof under Ujjwala 2.0. A self-declaration will suffice for both the ‘family declaration’ and the ‘proof of address.’

Ujjwala 2.0 will contribute to the Prime Minister’s vision of universal access to LPG. Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep S Puri and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath will also be present.
