Today is ‘Atham,’ which means it’s time for another ‘Onam’ season in the midst of a pandemic……

Kochi: Another Onam season is on the horizon. Onam is Kerala’s most important cultural event. Today is ‘Atham,’ and the Thiruvonam is on the tenth day after that.

To welcome Onam, Keralites would place ‘Pookkalam’ (flower carpets) in front of their homes. Onam is celebrated in the Malayalam month of ‘Chingam,’ although this year the ‘Atham’ has begun with ‘Karkkadakam.’

This time, ‘Atham’ is scheduled for two days, August 12 and 13. However, ‘Uthram’ will end at 8.54 a.m. on Thursday, and ‘Atham’ will begin the very next second.

According to Sankaradil Murali, an astrologer, ‘Atham’ finishes on Friday at 8.01 a.m., hence this time Thursday will be deemed ‘Atham.’

‘Chingam’ begins on August 17 and ‘Thiruvonam’ is on August 21. All temples will keep the celebrations to minor ceremonies and customs. The annual ‘Atham Ghoshayatra’ (procession) in Thrippunithura has also been canceled this year.
