In the aftermath of a student’s death, a mob attacks Indian businesses in Congo

Kinshasa: A mob attacked Indian businesses and vehicles in the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s capital on Thursday, according to police, as part of the ongoing fallout from the death of a Congolese student in Indian police custody last week.
Following the death of Jol Malu, a Congolese student in Bangalore, several Indian businesses in Kinshasa were looted last week.

African diplomats have previously complained about racism against their citizens living in India, particularly in the aftermath of the 2016 beating death of a Congolese man in Dehli.

According to Congolese police, a mob looted Indian shops and warehouses, set a car on fire, and stoned three other vehicles in Kinshasa’s Limete neighbourhood on Thursday in response to a false report that a second Congolese national had died in India.

“Uncivilized people, primarily young people, have been looting stores and warehouses owned by Indian nationals,” Kinshasa police commissioner Sylvano Kasongo said.

Kasongo said that police arrested three people and recovered 40 bales of stolen clothing. There were no injuries mentioned in the statement.

On August 1, Malu was arrested in Bangalore on suspicion of drug possession. According to Indian police, he complained of chest pains and was taken to a hospital, where he died.
His death sparked clashes the next day in Bangalore between protesters and officers wielding batons.
