Manish Maheshwari, the CEO of Twitter India, will relocate to the United States to take on the post of Senior Director

New Delhi: Twitter’s India MD Manish Maheshwari was promoted to a larger role at the company’s headquarters in the United States on Friday (August 13), as the microblogging platform confronts a political backlash for shutting Congress and its leaders’ accounts. Maheshwari, a former CEO of Network18 Digital who joined Twitter in April 2019 as Managing Director for country operations, is relocating to San Francisco to take on a new role as Senior Director, Revenue Strategy and Operations focusing on ‘New Market Entry.’

“Thank you for your leadership of our Indian company over the last two years, @manishm. Congratulations on your new post in the responsibility of revenue strategy and operations for new markets throughout the world, based in the United States. I’m thrilled to see you take the lead on this critical opportunity for Twitter’s growth “Yu Sasamoto, Twitter’s VP for the JAPAC region, stated in a post on Friday. Twitter was yet to name a new Indian president.

Maheshwari’s exit comes as Twitter has suspended the accounts of Rahul Gandhi and other Congress officials for breaking their policy. Congress has claimed that it was done at the government’s request. “They are interfering in our political process by shutting off my Twitter,” Gandhi stated.

“A corporation has made it it is business to define our politics. That bothers me as a politician. This is an attack on the country’s democratic structure. This is not a smear campaign against Rahul Gandhi.”

Twitter revised its stance, stating that the rules are applied judiciously and impartially to all users of the service. According to the firm, “we have taken preemptive action on several hundred Tweets that uploaded a picture that violated our Rules, and we may continue to do so in line with our range of enforcement options.”

In the midst of the political uproar, the Centre told the Delhi High Court this week that Twitter had appointed permanent officers as required by the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021.

Twitter notified the Delhi High Court on August 6 that it had assigned personnel to the positions of Chief Compliance Officer, Resident Grievance Officer, and Nodal Contact Person in accordance with the stipulations of new IT laws.
