Legal Action Taken Against Traders Using Unregulated Measurement for Jasmine Flower Sales

Six traders in Kerala are facing legal consequences after the Legal Metrology Department discovered their use of an outdated and imprecise arm-length measurement (‘Muzham’) to sell jasmine flower strings. This practice has been deemed illegal as it lacks accuracy due to variations in individuals’ arm lengths.

The offenders have been fined Rs 2,000 each. According to the law, the sale of jasmine flowers should be conducted using either a fixed-length scale or a weighing scale to ensure accuracy. Additionally, action has been taken against sellers who used unmarked weights on weighing scales for flower transactions.

It is noteworthy that the Legal Metrology Department conducted inspections on roadside flower stalls during the festive season of Onam. Officials revealed that numerous sellers were exploiting this time frame to engage in dishonest practices involving scale measurements.
