Five Afghans are killed by gunfire at Kabul International Airport as they flee Taliban rule

At least five people were killed by gunfire on Monday at the Kabul international airport’s passenger terminal, where thousands of Afghans fleeing the Taliban’s takeover of the country had gathered in the hopes of catching an evacuation flight, according to The Wall Street Journal.

According to the report, witnesses saw the bloodied bodies lying on the ground just outside the terminal building.
US Central Command officials were not immediately available for comment.
Following the collapse of the Afghan government on Sunday, the US military has taken over security at Kabul airport in order to carry out the massive airlift of foreign diplomats and citizens.
Those evacuation flights are handled on the airport’s separate military side.

As the victorious Taliban combed Kabul for those who had collaborated with the West, the US military expanded its footprint to the civilian terminal, where thousands of desperate Afghans, many of whom had previously worked for American forces, continued to flock.
According to a Western military official, the US Marines fired warning shots late on Sunday after hundreds of Afghans breached the perimeter and rushed to board an idling C-17 transport plane.
