Kochi Set to Welcome International Cricket Stadium with 40,000 Capacity: KCA Submits Proposal

Kochi is gearing up to become home to a state-of-the-art international cricket stadium with a capacity for 40,000 spectators, as the Kerala Cricket Association (KCA) submits an ambitious proposal to the state government. The KCA presented the draft at the International Sports Summit, marking a significant step toward the realization of a world-class sports infrastructure.

Key Points

Proposal Submission: The Kerala Cricket Association, under the leadership of president Jayesh George, has submitted a comprehensive proposal for the construction of a new cricket stadium in Kochi. The draft was handed over to the Chief Minister during the International Sports Summit.

BCCI Approval: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has granted approval for the identified site, emphasizing the significance of having a modern cricketing facility in Kochi.

Multi-Sports City Concept: The ultimate vision outlined by KCA is not limited to just a cricket stadium. The proposal envisions the development of a multi-sports city in Kochi, incorporating various facilities to cater to diverse sports and recreational activities.

Project Budget: Reports suggest that the estimated budget for the entire project, named ‘Kochi Sports City,’ may surpass Rs 1500 crore. The substantial investment reflects the commitment to creating a world-class sports and entertainment destination.

Land Acquisition: KCA has acquired 60 acres of land near Nedumbassery airport for the project. The selected 40 acres will be dedicated to the construction of the international cricket stadium, designed to accommodate 40,000 spectators.

Comprehensive Facilities: The proposed sports city aims to offer a comprehensive set of facilities, including indoor and outdoor training facilities, a special training ground, sports academy, research center, eco-park, water sports park, sports medicine and fitness center, e-sports arena, entertainment zone, and a clubhouse.

Historical Context: KCA’s move comes after a previous attempt to build a sports complex faced challenges and obstacles. The association is now moving forward with confidence, having received assurances from the government regarding the land’s usage for stadium construction.

The proposed international cricket stadium and sports city in Kochi signify a significant stride in enhancing sports infrastructure in the region, promising a vibrant hub for sports enthusiasts and athletes alike. The project aligns with the broader vision of fostering a culture of sports and recreation in Kerala.
