Mammootty and Mohanlal have announced the release of Kaapa, a film starring Manju Warrier and Prithviraj

Mammootty and Mohanlal, Malayalam cinema’s top two stars, revealed the motion poster for an upcoming film titled Kaapa on their social media profiles on Wednesday morning. In the motion poster, Manju Warrier, Prithviraj Sukumaran, Anna Ben, and Asif Ali appear as illustrations against Thiruvananthapuram landmarks. Venu, a cinematographer-turned-filmmaker who has worked on films like Daya, Munnariyippu, and Carbon, directs the film. GR Indugopan, a well-known Malayalam writer, wrote the story and screenplay.

The film’s title relates to the KAAPA Act, also known as the Kerala Anti-Social Activities Act of 2007, which imprisons those who pose a threat to society. In other words, it is Kerala’s Goonda Act for action against ‘goons,’ yet it has long been criticized for being severe and prone to abuse.

“This is a venture undertaken by FEFKA Writers Union and I wish them all the best!” declares Mammootty and Mohanlal on Facebook.

The short motion poster, narrated by veteran actor Nandhu, depicts Thiruvananthapuram’s notable sights such as the Padmanabha Swamy Temple, the Secretariat, the Kovalam lighthouse, the central train station, the Palayam mosque, the Connemora market, and the East Fort. When a certain incident occurs in Ernakulam, Nandhu explains the Goonda Act and references Kerala’s Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan resurrecting the act four years ago. Nandhu tells that the intelligence created a list of 2011 goons, of which 237 are in Thiruvananthapuram, and that “that’s when all of the stuff happened here.”

The narration is accompanied by lively background music. Justin Varghese composed the music, which is known for his wonderful work in films such as Thanneermathan Dinangal and, more recently, Joji.

Sanu John Varughese, who recently became a filmmaker with Aarkariyam, did the cinematography. Mahesh Narayanan, whose previous feature with Fahadh Faasil, Malik, is still the talk of the town, edited the film. Dolwin Kuriakose, Jinu V Abraham, and Dileesh Nair are the film’s producers.
