When will COVID-19 vaccines be available in India for children? The Director of the ICMR-NIV responds

New Delhi: In the midst of speculations that the third wave of COVID-19 may hit India in September, ICMR-NIV Director Priya Abraham has commented on the latest breakthroughs in coronavirus vaccinations for children. She stated that Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin is now being tested in Phase II and III trials for children aged 2 to 18 years.

“Hopefully, the results will be ready shortly. The findings will be reported to regulators. So, by September or shortly thereafter, we could have COVID-19 vaccines for youngsters “PIB cited the Director of the National Institute of Virology as stating.

She also mentioned Zydus Cadila’s COVID-19 vaccine study, which can be used on youngsters and would be made available. Zydus Cadila’s vaccine, according to Abraham, will be the first DNA vaccine available for use.

Abraham also stated that India will soon have Genova Biopharmaceuticals Ltd’s mRNA vaccine, Biological-E vaccine, and Novovax from the Serum Institute of India.

The ICMR-NIV Director also discussed COVID-19 booster dosages, stating that studies have been conducted in several countries and that at least seven different vaccinations have been tested for a booster dose.

“The WHO has now put a halt to it until other countries catch up on immunization. This is due to a worrisome vaccination disparity between high-income and low-income countries. However, booster recommendations will undoubtedly be forthcoming in the future “She stated.

Abraham also commented on the combination of coronavirus vaccines, saying, “In one case, two distinct vaccines were administered mistakenly in two doses. We analyzed those samples at NIV and discovered that the individuals who received two doses of various vaccines were safe. There were no side effects observed, and immunogenicity was slightly improved.”

“As a result, it is unquestionably not anything that will pose a safety risk.” “We are investigating this occurrence and will be able to provide additional information in a few days,” she added.

She also urged people against crowding since it will ‘invite’ the next wave of COVID-19.

“There will be more versions in the future.” We have two weapons that provide the most protection. These include correctly wearing masks and actively pushing everyone to get vaccinated. Even if a wave does form, it will be small.
