India’s Abstention on Gaza Resolution Sparks Outrage: Left Parties to Hold Pro-Palestine Protest

India’s decision to abstain from voting on a United Nations resolution calling for a truce in Gaza has drawn sharp criticism from the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) and the Communist Party of India (CPI). In a joint statement, CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury and CPI General Secretary D Raja expressed shock over India’s move, stating that it signifies India’s alignment with US imperialism in shaping its foreign policy.

The statement titled ‘Stop this Genocidal Aggression in Gaza’ condemned India’s abstention on the resolution adopted by the UN General Assembly, which called for a humanitarian truce amidst the Israeli offensive in Gaza. The parties highlighted the escalating air and ground attacks by Israel in the Gaza strip, leading to a humanitarian crisis for the 2.2 million Palestinians residing there. The statement emphasized the need for an immediate ceasefire, respecting the UN General Assembly’s overwhelming mandate, and urged the United Nations to reenergize efforts for a 2-State solution with pre-1967 borders, designating East Jerusalem as the capital of the State of Palestine.

In response to India’s decision, the CPI(M) announced a protest scheduled for Sunday at its AKG Bhawan office, demonstrating solidarity with Palestine. The protest, attended by members of the Central Committee and the Polit Bureau of the party, aims to voice opposition against India’s foreign policy alignment and its abstention on the Gaza resolution. The ongoing session of the Central Committee of the CPI(M), which began on Friday, will conclude on Sunday, coinciding with the protest against India’s stance on the Gaza issue.

The UN resolution was adopted with 120 nations in favor, 14 against, and 45 abstentions, including India, Australia, Canada, Germany, Japan, Ukraine, and the UK. The joint protest by the Left parties signifies their strong dissent against India’s foreign policy decisions concerning the Palestinian cause.
